Overview

The Starfleet rank of Lieutenant Commander (O-4) is the rank held by the executive officers of smaller Federation starships, the commanders of smaller starships, and of smaller bases, after the line rank of Lieutenant and before Commander. The marine equivalent rank is Major.

Lieutenant Commander is granted to new commanding officers, as stipulated by By-law #2.4. Lieutenant Commander is also the highest rank that a commanding officer may promote a crewmember to, without the approval of a TFCO.
