Description
Name
Vaebn T'Khev
Appearance
Vaebn is about average height for a male Romulan of his age, though his posture and bearing often make him seem taller than he actually is. While Vaebn is rather thin, his deep voice generally gives him an air of strength that might otherwise be absent. He has short black hair that, though he keeps neatly groomed, often becomes more free and windblown in the front. His eyes are dark gray, almost charcoal, in color and it is often hard to distinguish them from black. Vaebn's facial features are decidedly Romulan from the sublimed angles in his chin and jaw, to his jutting eyebrows separated by a V-shaped bone ridge, to the copper hue of his skin, all of which seem to grant the appearance of a man years younger.
Psychological Information
Languages: Romulan, Federation Standard
Interests: Science (specifically physics), Mathematics, Strategy, and Intrigues
Description of Personality
Vaebn T'Khev tries to act in accordance with the ideal of Romulan honor at all times. He is slightly xenophobic but is often able to hide it quite well. Because of this, it takes a bit longer than normal to get into Vaebn's good graces. This is coupled with a not so subtle state of study and judgment that T'Khev adopts during first impressions and a near eternal bent toward introspection. Though, all of this is somewhat soothed by his growing respect for the Federation and his belief in the aims of the allied fleet. Friends, however rare, are both honored and respected while enemies are met with cold, calculated strategies that usually involve subterfuge and subversion. Vaebn's tone has often been referred to as being cold, though should one wish to talk about science or mathematics two of Vaebn's strongest passions, one can expect a warmer conversation for as long as they can bear the technical jargon.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Vaebn is quick of study in both science and mathematics. On top of this, he is also an excellent strategist. However, Vaebn can oftentimes be slightly arrogant and more than a little stubborn stemming from his xenophobia and his ingrained belief in Romulan superiority .

Biographical Information
The Beginning [2347-2365]
Childhood [2347-2360]
Vaebn T'Khev was born on the thirteenth day of the third month of water, low Eisn, one thousand eight hundred thirteen years after Shipfall (the Terran equivalent of Spring 2347), to an offshoot of the Khev noble house in Ra'tleihfi, the capital of Romulus. His father, Maec T'Khev, was a successful merchant who had never had to leave the system during his compulsory military service, and because of this, became extremely xenophobic and isolationist. Contrary to this was his opinion on the Vulcans, whom he viewed as lost cousins, stemming from his strong, if silent, support for the ideals espoused by the Unificationists. Young Vaebn gained many unfortunate traits from his father; his bigotry, his arrogance, but also the fundamental ideals of Romulan duty and honor. Vaebn's mother, S'anra T'Khev was always compassionate and loving at home, but a cunning strategist and shrewd conniver in her professional dealings. Acting as a courtier among the Romulan Senate, she held the stereotypical Romulan mastery of subterfuge and subversion; traits she saw necessary to teach her young son along with etiquette and strategy.
Maec was raising young Vaebn to be the ideal Romulan male, perfectly equipped to serve the Empire through a life of military service; a life that Maec had once wished for himself. S'anra, on the other hand, wished for her son a life in politics and taught him all he needed to know to one day secure a career as a provincial governor or senator; skills Vaebn would also need to master just to survive life among the Ra'tleihfi noble houses. Growing up, Vaebn led a relatively sheltered existance. Because his family was wealthy and respected, Vaebn's parents could obtain some of the finest private tutors Ra'tleihfi had to offer. However, because of this arrangement, Vaebn made very few friends who were not themselves members of some noble house. It was during this time that Vaebn would meet Ael Tr'Mrian and her older brother Argelian, both of whom would play major roles in Vaebn's life in the years to come.
Adolescence [2360-2365]
When Vaebn hit adolescence, he was allowed to leave his family's estate unsupervised for the first time. He had been trained well enough as to not publicly embarrass his house and had picked up the basics of self defense needed to transverse the often turbulent streets of the capital. His first excursions into Ra'tleihfi were often made with Argelian Tr'Mrian, a young noble himself and Vaebn's closest friend, along with his younger sister Ael who was slowly becoming much more than just his friend. By the time Vaebn was sixteen, he and Ael had a full flung romantic relationship. This was at the same time condoned by her older brother and applauded by both sets of noble families. In his mother's eyes, this relationship would only help to cement Vaebn's future in politics by driving away any foolish notions of becoming a career soldier as espoused by his father. And were young Vaebn to eventually become a politician, it would mean a respectable name and life of peace and prosperity for the Tr'Mrian's only daughter. Because of this, both families actively sought to see these two wed. Unfortunately for them, Vaebn's future would be taking an altogether different course.
As Vaebn's eighteenth year drew closer, so too did the reality of military service, as all Romulans must complete a compulsory five years. Vaebn had known that this day would come and had resolved to do his duty in peace before returning back to Ra'tleihfi and settling back into a life with Ael. At this time, Argelian was also preparing for service and was able to persuade Vaebn to postpone his first assignment in order to study with him at the academy. Doing so would allow both men to enter service as officers which would look favorably on their families. It was Vaebn's choice to follow his friend to the academy that would forever change his life, and Ael has never fully forgiven her brother because of it.
Entering the Service [2365-2369]
The Academy [2365-2369]
Vaebn was accepted and excelled at the Imperial Romulan Military Academy. Oddly enough, Vaebn made quite the name for himself in the fields of science and mathematics. Some would later comment that this was due to a mixture of natural curiosity and some of the more inquisitive skills taught to him by his mother for use in a life of politics, as he was able to grasp new and complicated scientific theories with comfort and ease. During this time, Vaebn and Argelian began to grow apart. Argelian was training to become a member of the Tal'Shiar, an intelligence agency independent from the rest of the Star Navy, and because of this was not able to discuss much of what he was learning with his peers. Vaebn, on the other hand, had grown rather fond of the science field, especially physics, and spent the majority of his free time in the labs.
As might have been expected, the instructors at the academy cared little about their cadets' heritage or upbringing and for the first time in his life Vaebn was treated as any normal citizen-soldier; and this, frankly, suited him just fine. After four years of study, Vaebn graduated from the academy, albeit with lower marks than he had originally anticipated, probably due to his lack of motivation in subjects that were not immediately interesting to him. Despite this, the Star Navy noticed his dedication to the sciences and commissioned him as an Uhlan; giving Vaebn his first military assignment.
Serving the Empire [2369-2383]
Compulsory Military Service [2369-2374]
Vaebn's first assignment as an officer in the Romulan Star Navy was aboard the IRV Hnoiyikar on which he served as the stellar cartographer. It was supposed to be an honor to serve on this vessel as it was tasked with the defense and patrolling of the Rom System; a post only granted to those of esteem; a post given to Vaebn due, no doubt, to meddling from his family. Vaebn, however, was not all too happy with this assignment. In the last couple of years he had grown to love science and was really looking forward to having the chance to explore and study the far reaches of the galaxy - not his own backyard. Further, working in stellar cartography was extremely dull under the circumstances since there was nothing new to chart. At the very least, this time would allow Vaebn to familiarize himself with Romulan vessels without any real risk of danger.
However, in some respects, the time spent aboard the IRV Hnoiyikar in order to fulfill his service obligation was a blessing. With little demand for his department so close to home, Vaebn was able to continue studying and working on the things that had interested him while studying at the academy. It was this work that caught the attention of the Tal Diann; fleet intelligence for the Romulan Star Navy. They offered Vaebn a posting on one of their science vessels and also included a promotion from Uhlan to Sub-Lieutenant. Feeling cheated at having done nothing worthwhile with his five year military service, Vaebn accepted the transfer and from that point on all but lost contact with his family and friends from his homeworld.
The Tal Diann Transfer [2374-2381]
Vaebn should have expected that his work within fleet intelligence would have had little to do with science. Though most of his mission aboard the Tal Diann science vessel, the IRV Aehallh, has been suppressed, the truth of the matter may be found below. Vaebn's vessel was stationed near the Romulan-Cardassian border, and though appearing to be staffed by scientists was actually the base of operations for Tal Diann spies tasked with gathering intelligence on the workings of the Tal'Shiar in the area during the latter half of the Dominion War.
It was during this time that Vaebn was first able to view the effects of cooperation between the Romulan Star Empire and the United federation of Planets. After the war came to an end, the Tal Diann would replace the crew of the IRV Aehallh with scientists under their employ. Sub-Lieutenant T'Khev would stay, of course, and for the next few years, utilize his specialties in science and mathematics making interesting new inroads into weapons development.
Disaster would strike in 2379, when back on Romulus, Shinzon led a coup on the Romulan Senate. To further secure his position, he ordered his Reman shock troops to kill anyone who might still harbor loyalties to the old Senate. S'anra T'Khev immediately became a target. Somewhat luckily, the night the Reman commandos struck the T'Khev home, Vaebn's mother was absent. However, the commandos found his father that night and publicly assassinated him as a warning to all other supposed loyalists. Vaebn received word of his father's death from Ael Tr'Mrian, her first contact with him in years, along with a message saying that his mother was alright, if a bit frazzled. Unfortunately, Vaebn was unable to leave the IRV Aehallh and would stay aboard for another two years without ever saying a proper goodbye to his father.
Return to the Star Navy [2381-2383]
With the Federation able to bring some semblance of order back to Romulus by defeating Shinzon, the political climate of Vaebn's homeworld began to change. A younger, less reactionary senate formed seeking peace with the Federation. In fact, it was Vaebn's own opinion that in its weakened state, the Star Empire would crumble without the help of several strong allies. Ever the politician, Vaebn's mother, S'anra T'Khev, adapted to this new senate and their new ideas with ease, and began undertaking diplomatic missions for the Empire she so loved.
At this time, Vaebn had been transfered back to the Star Navy from fleet intelligence and was awaiting assignment aboard the IRV Ra'kholh on which he was to serve as the assistant to the Chief Science Officer. The IRV Ra'kholh was one of the newer Valdore-class warbirds whose mission was to undertake standardized patrols of the Romulan-Federation Neutral Zone. However, that same year, tragedy would strike when crossing the Neutral Zone on a diplomatic mission into Federation space, S'anra T'Khev's vessel was fired upon and disabled by pirates. They stripped the ship and murdered those aboard. None were left alive. Vaebn would later learn of this through proper military channels when his ship was tasked with finding, capturing, or destroying these renegades. Unfortunately for Vaebn, the IRV Ra'kholh never found any sign of the pirates.
Vaebn would later learn that these pirates and their vessel had been disabled and captured by a Federation starship operating on the far side of the Neutral Zone. The fact that Vaebn had no real family left on Romulus; no one left he cared about - except for Ael, who was now almost never in contact, struck him hard. The fact that the Federation were the ones to bring his mother's killers to justice, when his own people had failed, also began to sink in. Vaebn knew that incidents like these would not soon stop and that the continued survival of the Star Empire really depended on the quality of its allies. Because of this, Vaebn would set out to make one of the hardest decisions in his life.
